Internship Report and Monography entitled "Antibacterial activity of cranberry against urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli"

Cláudia Gama, Ana Paula Reis and Marta Madeira), analysed through SWOT methodology (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats). Monography - Abstract: Cranberry or american cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is a rich source of phenolic compounds, particularly proanthocyanidins, which display beneficial effects against urinary tract infections (UTIs), the second most prevalent bacterial infection worldwide. Urinary tract infections’ most common pathogen is Escherichia coli, specifically uropathogenic Escherichia coli. Urinary tract infections are conventionally treated, and even prevented, through antibiotherapy. This approach leads to the emergence and increase of antibiotic resistance, an increasingly serious global problem with greater repercussions in healthcare services. Alternative therapeutic strategies are investigated for prophylaxis and treatment against UTIs, using natural products such as cranberries. Its role in inhibiting Escherichia coli’s adhesion to the host’s urothelium has been deeply studied and other mechanisms have been proposed to explain its antibacterial properties, namely by decreassing biofilm formation and inducing Tamm-Horsfall Protein's secretion. Monografia - Resumo: O arando vermelho (Vaccinium macrocarpon) é uma baga rica em compostos fenólicos, particularmente, proantocianidinas, que demonstram efeitos benéficos face a infeções do trato urinário (ITUs), a segunda infeção bacteriana mais prevalente a nível mundial. O principal agente patogénico das infeções do trato urinário é a Escherichia coli, mais concretamente, a Escherichia coli uropatogénica. As infeções do trato urinário são convencionalmente tratadas, e até mesmo prevenidas, recorrendo a antibioterapia. Esta abordagem conduz à emergência e ao aumento de resistência microbiana aos antibióticos, um problema global, cada vez mais grave e com maiores repercussões nos cuidados de saúde. Assim, são investigadas alternativas terapêuticas para a profilaxia e tratamento de infeções do trato urinário, recorrendo a produtos naturais, através da Fitoterapia, como o arando vermelho. O seu papel na inibição da adesão de Escherichia coli ao urotélio tem sido estudado de forma mais aprofundada e têm sido propostos outros mecanismos de ação para as suas propriedades antibacterianas.
